A podium is not just a terrace with plants on it

A terrace garden or podium is a layered assembly. The waterproofing membrane may be buried under screed, drainage layers, soil, planting and paving — so a leak can mean removing and rebuilding the landscape just to reach the source. The right sequence, detailing and testing before the layers are covered matter as much as the materials themselves.

Water must be stopped

The waterproofing layers protect the structural slab and the occupied spaces below from water penetration.

Water must also drain

Slope, drainage boards, geotextile and accessible outlets help prevent water from remaining trapped within the build-up.

Buried details need attention

Upstands, movement joints, planter walls, pipe penetrations and outlets should be identified and treated before landscaping begins.

Test before covering

Waterproofing should be inspected and tested while it is still accessible, before protection and landscape layers hide it.

The Weatherblazer Podium Waterproofing Process

A planned sequence of preparation, repair, two waterproofing layers and drainage protection. Each stage must be completed before the next layer conceals it.

01
Surface Preparation
Chip off excess material and remove dust, loose particles and other weak material to prepare a sound surface for the system.
02
Honeycombing Repair
Clean honeycombed areas by removing all damaged concrete. Repair the prepared areas with polymerised concrete before waterproofing begins.
Repair material: Polymerised concrete, with the suitable bonding/modification system selected for the site.
03
Repair Large Holes & Damaged Concrete
Remove unsound concrete and repair larger holes and damaged sections. Do not bridge major defects with the waterproofing coating alone.
04
First Waterproofing Layer — WATERBLAZER BLK
Apply two coats of WATERBLAZER BLK, with geotextile sandwiched into the specified membrane build-up. This cold-applied, single-component elastomeric membrane forms a seamless flexible barrier against water penetration.
Material: WATERBLAZER BLK with geotextile reinforcement as specified in the project method.
05
PCC for Slope Formation
Lay approximately 25–40 mm of PCC as specified for the project to maintain the required slope and direct water towards the drainage outlets. The slope and outlet locations should be checked before proceeding.
06
Second Waterproofing Layer — WATERBLAZER 102
Apply two coats of WATERBLAZER 102, the flexible polymer-modified mineral slurry, to create a further barrier between water and concrete. Surface preparation, coat sequence and curing must follow the approved project method and product instructions.
Material: WATERBLAZER 102.
07
Drainage Board & Geotextile
Install the drainage board and lay geotextile above it as part of the drainage build-up. This layer helps channel excess water towards outlets and reduces the risk of fines entering and clogging the drainage layer.
Important: Do not cover the waterproofing until the application has been inspected and the specified water test has been completed and recorded. Final protection, root barrier requirements, drainage outlets and landscape build-up should be confirmed against the project design before soil, planting or hardscape is installed.

Materials in the WBI System

Each layer has a distinct role. The final selection and installation details are confirmed for the actual podium, substrate, drainage design and landscape above.

Primary waterproofing layers

WATERBLAZER BLK

A ready-to-use, cold-applied, single-component elastomeric liquid membrane that forms a seamless, flexible protective film.

  • Used as the first waterproofing layer in the WBI podium system
  • Applied in two coats with geotextile incorporated as specified
  • Suitable for a range of concrete and substructure waterproofing applications

WATERBLAZER 102

A flexible polymer-modified mineral slurry used as the second waterproofing layer in the specified WBI podium build-up.

  • Applied in two coats
  • Provides an additional barrier between water and concrete
  • Applied over the prepared slope-forming layer according to the project method
Supporting layers and repairs

Polymerised Concrete

Used to repair honeycombing, larger voids and damaged concrete after all unsound material has been removed.

PCC Slope Layer

A project-specified 25–40 mm PCC layer to establish the required slope and guide water towards the drainage outlets.

Geotextile

Used in the specified membrane and drainage build-up. Its placement and laps should follow the approved system details.

Drainage Board

Installed above the waterproofing build-up to help drain water at the landscape level. Outlets must remain serviceable and accessible for maintenance.

Plan Your Podium Waterproofing Before the Landscape Goes In

Request a site assessment to review the substrate, slope, joints, penetrations, drainage outlets and waterproofing sequence before the build-up is covered.
