There is a stain on your ceiling. Roughly circular, slightly darker at the edge, and it has been there since the second week of the monsoon.
Almost everyone does the same thing next: they look at the ceiling, work out what is directly above it, and conclude that whatever is up there is the problem. If it is a terrace, the terrace has failed. If it is a bathroom, the bathroom is leaking. If it is a neighbour's flat, the neighbour is at fault.
That reasoning is wrong often enough to be dangerous, and it is the reason so many people have paid to treat the wrong surface — sometimes twice.
Water is not a straight line. It enters at a defect, travels along whatever path is easiest, and appears at the first point where it can evaporate or drip. The stain marks the exit. The entry can be metres away, on a different plane, and frequently on a different level of the building.
The two rules that explain almost every leak
Water moves down, but it moves sideways first
A slab is not a smooth funnel. Water entering at a parapet junction runs along the top of the structural slab, under the screed, until it finds a low point, a crack, a conduit or a joint. That may be ten metres from where it entered.
Water appears where it can leave
Trapped water does not stain. It stains where it reaches a surface that lets it evaporate. That is why stains cluster around light fittings, ceiling corners, beam lines and wall junctions — those are the weak points of the plaster, not of the waterproofing.
Put the two together and you get the sentence that governs everything below: water shows you where it came out, never where it went in.
The timing table
This is the single most useful diagnostic tool a non-technical person has, and it costs nothing to use. Note when the patch appears and when it goes.

Two rows deserve emphasis, because they are the ones people get backwards.
Row two is why owners are told the leak is coming from somewhere else. A patch that appears late and stays for weeks is the signature of a saturated fill layer — coba, sunken-slab fill, a terrace garden's soil. That layer is holding water and feeding the slab long after the sky has cleared, so nothing about the stain correlates neatly with rainfall. Which is precisely why it gets misread.
Row three is the one that saves money. If the damp is identical in January and July, rain is not the cause. Treating the terrace will change nothing — and a great many terraces in this country have been re-waterproofed to fix a plumbing leak.
Where it showed, and where it could have come from
The location of a stain narrows the search. It rarely closes it.

The conduit row surprises people most. An electrical conduit is a smooth pipe running through the slab and down the wall. Water that finds it travels along it and emerges at the first fitting — which is why so many ceilings stain in a neat ring around a light point that has nothing wrong with it.
Reading the failure itself
What the surface is doing is evidence, not just damage.

Efflorescence deserves its own line. It is proof that water has passed through the material rather than merely sitting on it — a different problem from a surface stain, and one that needs a different answer.
